Friendship Blocks

Happy Easter

Friendship Block Request for Sharon “the Librarian” Fry

Of all of the quilts I have created, my very favorites are those made with blocks made by my fellow guild members via the Friendship Block program.  I have quilts for Christmas, Halloween, Patriotic holidays, Valentine’s Day, and now I want to make an Easter quilt.

I am very partial to Easter bunnies (silly, cute, funny, whimsical, cuddly,  maybe even kitties dressed up as bunnies – bunnies do not have to be white – they can even be a print), carrots for those bunnies to nibble on, baskets filled with goodies, Spring flowers, butterflies, lambs, Easter bonnets, birds, bird nests, chicks, and of course,  decorated Easter eggs, even Sunbonnet Sue dressed in her Easter best.

I am going for bright, vibrant, pretty pastels ~~ pinks, greens, yellows, blues, lavenders, purples.  And yes, browns to represent chocolates are fine, too.  When choosing colors think “happy shades” (for those pinks, for instance, not baby-girl pink, and not lipstick-red).

Background fabric may be a sweet Spring floral, or maybe an Easter theme, or white, or pastel.

Choose an idea from a guild library book, Pinterest, or create your own design.  And guess what ~~ I have pulled a pile of books from our guild’s library if you need some ideas.

The block size may be anywhere between 6 and 12.5 inches – rectangular or square.  For example: if your block comes out at 8.75 inches by 10.25 inches, that is perfectly OK as I am going to frame the blocks and then have a good time putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

Any technique is fine (pieced, appliqued, foundation pieced).  If applique is chosen, please be sure to stitch down the edges to make the blocks permanent.

Embellish, if you wish ~~ buttons, rick rack, beads, ribbons, trims, lace, yo-yos (they make great bunny tails), embroidery (those bunnies might need some whiskers, for instance).  If you have extra Easter-themed embellishments that you don’t know what to do with, I would love to have them to decorate my quilt.

While pawing through your fabrics, if you come up with some extra Easter-themed pieces to share with me I will incorporate them.

As with all works of art, I really would like for you to sign your block on the FRONT (not in the seam allowance).  I carry marking pens meant for fabric in my guild tote bag.

Deadline: by the end of the guild meeting on May 1, 2025. Turn your block in to Lisa Gamble so that she can record your block for a Friendship Block credit, then she will have Linda Hooper photograph your piece of art for our Friendship Block page on the guild’s website.

Act quickly and sign up with Lisa Gamble, Chair of the Friendship Block program, to be one of the 20 people to make a HAPPY Easter block for me.

I cannot wait to start playing with the Easter blocks, so HOP TO IT!
