Diana Roberts Invite to Moonlight Quilters

July 11th, 2012

Moonlight Quilters have asked me to speak at their meeting July 18th. I will bring about 40 quilts and tell you their stories. What I have learned both good and bad and some funny………..there is no fee to come. The meeting starts at 7 on Wednesday July 18th. The meetings are in the Vets building, the east side of the building. Hope to see you there,
Diana Roberts

Request from member, Jim Jensen

July 11th, 2012

Hello good guild people,

I am volunteering with the Council on Aging in the newly formed Santa Rosa Senior Social Club, which provides socialization for elders who live with physical and/or cognitive challenges, and provides a bit of respite time for their caregivers.

Does anyone have experience in the quilting realm of using fabric as therapy (other than what it does for us!)?

I have researched a bit, and found that quilts made of fabric with very different textures, patterns and colors bring some comfort to anxious hands. I was thinking that perhaps colorful shapes sewn together individually (like individual triangles and squares) as a kind of “puzzle” might work.

If anyone has any ideas, I will be very grateful.

Hi SRQG Members — you may not know Jim by name as he is one of our newer members, but you will recognize him as one of the people who sets up and takes down our our speaker system, hangs our guild banner, and then assists in our library. Hope you can give him some good ideas!

Pointless Sisters Quilt Exhibit at Finley Community Center

July 11th, 2012

Good morning quilt lovers!

Have you been to the Finley Community Center to see the Pointless Sisters quilt exhibit?

Joy McGoran and I treated ourselves to the show after our guild meeting Thursday.

I took lots of photos of the quilts and am sharing one with you in this email. The one I have included is a portion of the panel Nancy McDermott created for the magnificent river quilt that was designed by Linda Morand. I have seen this quilt displayed several times, but always from a distance and therefore missed all of the wonderful little details. This showing gives us the opportunity to be a nose-length from all of the pieces and really study them and discover all of their extra secrets.

I had also seen the food challenge pieces before, but once again, too far to pick up the wonderful details. This time D. J. Berger’s “broccoli/cauliflower” made me wonder why she included the word “Romanesco.” A quick google was an ah-ha moment for me. I can’t wait to seek out these “fractal foods” in the produce section. Do these hints about the show whet your appetite and curiosity? I don’t want to give too much away, but just want to remind you to stop and see the show before it closes on August 9.

At a recent guild meeting Laura Barrett gave me a hint about her piece — she used an idea she learned in the Technique Sharing Workshop I presented not long ago about a different, easy way to make circle quilts. I got a kick out of how she incorporated items from the hardware, such as sandbags, landscape cloth, and washers.

I had mixed emotions when I saw the red stickers on Pam Pincher’s corn pieces ~~ thrilled that she sold them, but wishing I had been the one to see them first and purchase them for myself. Amazing what you can do with an ear of corn and some paint, fabric, thread (and TALENT!).

Gale Davis’ “Gray Hounds” made me want to run home and try her Therese May technique.

Ellindale Wells’ barn gave me ideas for a future “I Spy” quilt.

OK — my time is up — the sun is out — I have to get outside and water my posies before I melt — otherwise I would be going on and on and on about all of the pieces in the show. Well done, Pointless Sisters! And thanks, Joy McGoran, for accompanying me and making my experience even more fun with your extra set of eyes to help me pick up the details!
